How Custom Record Types Are Imported

Either import data into custom record types that you have already created, or create custom record types during the import process. Using the Import Data Wizard to create a custom record type is recommended only if:

• The new record type has a 1:N (One-to-Many) relationship with an existing record type.
• Only one source maps to it.
• The Status and Status Reason attributes are not mandatory for the new record type.

When to Create the Custom Record Type Yourself

• The Import Data Wizard cannot create a custom record type that has N:N (Many-to-Many) relationships to other record types. If you need this, you must create the custom record type prior to importing your data.
• If you need to create a custom record type that has mandatory Status and Status Reason attributes, do the following:
  • Create the record type prior to importing data to it.
  • Manually edit the data map for the import to include list value mapping between the source values and the Status and Status Reason attributes.

Suggested Modifications After the Wizard Creates a New Record Type

The Import Data Wizard only adds new record types and new fields. It does not customize the form or views for the record type. When import is complete, review the customized record type in the Customization area to make the following changes to the new record type, at a minimum:

• Edit the form for the record type to add the new fields to it.
• Edit the views for the record type to display the new fields.
• Define any relationships between the new record type and existing record types.
